Shelley declared he would rather be damned with Plato and Lord Bacon than go to heaven with Paley and Malthus. Davy had more insight into Bacon – he did not forget his contemning of Gilbert. But it was Shelley who made Bacon’s vision, which inspired both Davy and himself, the fire of lyric. One has only to read the song of the Earth towards the close of Prometheus Unbound to know that Shelley was kindled by the dream of man’s possible dominion through knowledge as Wordsworth and Coleridge, though Coleridge praised Davy as a Baconian, never were.

The lightning is his slave; heaven’s utmost deep

Gives up her stars, and like a flock of sheep

They pass before his eye, are numbered, and roll on!

The tempest is his steed, he strides the air;

And the abyss shouts from her depth laid bare,

Heaven, hast thou secrets? Man unveils me; I have none.
